Editor-in-Chief Jana Short sat down with Echo CEO Josh Carr for an in-depth interview on hydrogen water, transparency, and what a wellness tool should actually do.

Ageless Living featured the Echo Hydrogen Flask in three regional editions this year. Same bottle, same CEO, same Editor-in-Chief asking the questions — and three very different ideas about what the point was.

Jana Short, Ageless Living's Editor-in-Chief, sat down with our CEO Josh Carr and covered a lot of ground: how the flask works, what's inside it, why we publish our test results, how Josh found hydrogen water in the first place. Then Los Angeles, Manhattan, and South Florida each took that conversation and pulled something different out of it.

That's the part worth reading for.

Three cities, three reasons

Los Angeles opened on recovery. Morning hikes above the canyon, biohacking clinics, longevity studios, quiet rituals in Malibu kitchens. The editor's read on that city was that how intelligently you recover counts for as much as how hard you push, and she placed Echo squarely in the conversation about oxidative stress and inflammation. Josh made a point in that interview we keep coming back to internally: a lot of what people write off as normal aging probably has more to do with those two things than with time passing. Her readers, she noted, aren't approaching aging from a place of fear. They're approaching it with intention.

Manhattan didn't care about any of that. Manhattan wanted numbers. The Fall 2026 feature is about precision and it reads like it — early workouts into investor calls, boardrooms into late dinners downtown, a city where people already track their sleep and schedule their recovery and measure everything in between. That audience was never going to be impressed by a nice-looking bottle, and the editor said so directly: they want quality, design, and proof. So the Manhattan piece went straight at the specs.

South Florida went somewhere else entirely. That feature is about motion. Palm Beach mornings, the private session in Boca, the wellness lunch in Miami, the flight to New York, the red-eye back from Europe. It's the only one of the three that really dug into what travel does to a body — which is a good question most hydration brands skip.

What we actually talked about

Customization. We launched in 2023 around one idea: hydrogen water systems that are smart as well as powerful. The flask has a touchscreen that lets you dial your hydrogen dose up or down, and the app connects to Apple Health and Google Health, so hydration sits alongside the rest of your data instead of floating outside it. The current bottle is about 50 percent larger than our first and delivers twice the hydrogen concentration, and it still fits the hand. Form follows function, as Josh put it.

Concentration. This is the part we're most willing to argue about. Our flask reaches up to 8 parts per million hydrogen. A lot of what's on the market sits around 4. That gap comes down to a component most people never think about — a proton exchange membrane, one of the most expensive pieces in the bottle and the first thing cheaper builds cut. Electricity splits the oxygen and hydrogen in the water, the oxygen goes out, the hydrogen goes back in. Skip the membrane and you change what you're actually drinking.

Transparency. Josh gets into the ppb problem whenever anyone will let him. Some companies list hydrogen content in parts per billion instead of parts per million. The number looks enormous. It means the same thing. His position hasn't moved: if hydrogen water is going mainstream, credibility goes first. Every batch of ours gets tested, and the third-party results are on our site for anyone who wants to check our math.

Travel. Pressurized cabin, extremely dry air, hours of sitting, a schedule that doesn't care — you can land already behind. Josh's routine for that is unglamorous: a bottle before the flight, one during, one after. Plenty of our customers do the same. He told Jana that when he follows it he recovers fast and feels good, then told her about walking Budapest with endless stairs, hip pain going in, feeling strong the whole trip. He was careful to say that was his experience and not a promise, which is probably why it landed.

The part we'd underline

Buried in the Manhattan feature is the most useful thing in any of the three, and it has nothing to do with our specs.

It's about 2:30 in the afternoon.

Everyone knows the moment. The day isn't done, your brain is, and the coffee is right there. Josh's challenge to that reader was to reach for the flask instead — his experience being clear, focused energy rather than the jittery version. But the detail that stuck with us is caffeine's roughly eight-hour half-life. That 3 p.m. cup is still working at 11 p.m. If you track your sleep and also reach for an afternoon coffee, you've been running an experiment against yourself.

Jana's framing of it was better than ours: high performers celebrate the ability to keep going, but real performance isn't built on depletion. It's built on recovery, clarity, and making good decisions before your body forces the issue.

We're not asking anyone to slow down. We built this for people who aren't going to.

Where it started

The most personal moment ran in LA.

Josh didn't come to hydrogen water as a founder. He came to it in pain, dealing with ankylosing spondylitis, a genetic form of arthritis. Echo's original founder, Paul, handed him a bottle. Josh tried it mostly to be polite. He was, in his own telling, skeptical.

A week later he was the one calling Paul.

That skepticism never really left, and honestly it's the best thing about how we build. It's why the test results are public, why we'd rather hand you a number than an adjective, and why we offer a 60-day challenge instead of a louder pitch. Try it for two months. Track what happens. Decide for yourself.
